Well it isn't, because I am living proof it works. I experienced the power of Dr. Pulos' bodybuilding program years ago, as I went from a skinny teenager to natural national bodybuilding champion.

I would stare in bewilderment at pictures in magazines that would show individuals whose body structure was similar to mine with huge amounts of muscle gained in only a few months -- while I was struggling to put on a few pounds of muscle in a year.

Then it dawned on me.

If I am following the same training as the top guys, eating the same food, taking the same supplements, but I am not making the same gains, there MUST be some other factor that I am overlooking. It's said that success leaves clues, so I went on a search that would make Sherlock Holmes proud.

Mind training

After years of hit and miss training teasers,I recalled the chapter on the ind in Arnold's Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding (Bodybuilding's original Holy book). In that section he shared how he developed numerous visualization techniques that allowed him to build his incredible body. When I cross-referenced his findings with other champions who built muscle rapidly, I found that every one of them referred to how they used muscle building psychological strategies to build their dynamic physiques.

The problem was that none of these champions could show exactly how they did it. In fact for most of them, mental training came naturally and they never really gave it much thought, although most were aware it was their mind training that made the difference between them and the also-ran physiques.

I became completely convinced that mental training was the missing link to my bodybuilding success. I poured over numerous books, tapes, articles and constantly reviewed materials from dozens of experts on sports performance, only to find that none of these experts worked with bodybuilders or wanted anything to do with them.

Although I did learn a great deal on how to improve my psychological approach to training, I never acquired a real hands-on program that I could use to accelerate my results.

The discovery

Then one day in 1996, while browsing through the self-help section of an out-of-the-way bookstore, I stumbled across what would turn out to be, the most powerful training tool I had ever laid my hands on.

There, tucked away in a corner where you could barely see it, was a funny looking cassette case, wrapped in plastic labeled "Self-hypnosis for Bodybuilding." I could hardly believe my good fortune. Figuring that a miracle just happened, I quickly grabbed the cassette and sprinted to the cashier counter to purchase the cassette.

Fortunately for me I had enough money to buy the cassette as I had been paid the day before from my restaurant job where I worked as a busboy. I ran home to the basement apartment that I shared with two foreign exchange students who neither spoke English nor shared my enthusiasm for lifting weights. I locked myself in the room, popped the cassette into my tape player and started listening.

Then next thing I knew, I was transported to a pleasant dream-like state that I could not recall experiencing before but somehow seemed familiar. As I listened to the soothing sound of the good doctor's voice coming over the earphones I drifted in an out of my conscious mind.

While it only seemed like a couple of minutes had gone by, the next thing I knew I was awakened by the sound of my cassette player clicking off. I looked at my watch. Wow! A whole 30 minutes had sped by in what seemed like an instant.

I flipped the CD over to the subliminal program side and listened to what I would describe as I kind of new-age jazz that bordered on the cheesy side. Although it was definitely not the heavy metal I was used to pounding in my ears as I geared up for my workouts, I can say the music had a pleasant and enjoyable beat to it. I listened and enjoyed the entire track as I was determined to do whatever it took to further my physical pursuits.

The dramatic change

Day by day, I repeated this process, every night before I went to bed and also when I had some free time. As the weeks went by I found myself getting stronger with each workout. My muscles became harder and more defined -- even though I was eating the same diet as before. I also found that I was constantly willing and able to train harder and longer than I ever could in the past.

Before I knew it, my body began to change and I was getting a lot of strange looks and stares from other members in the gym. After a couple of months the evidence was overwhelming, my body was changing at a pace I never had experienced before. Amazingly, the growth came effortlessly. I never seemed to crave junk food like I did before and I eagerly powered through super intense workouts day in and day out for weeks on end.

I continued this process for the next year and a half and wound up winning an overall provincial bodybuilding championship where I had never even placed before. This win led me to a trip to the National Championship where I received my first supplement contract.

In less than 18 months I improved more than I had in the previous 10 years of training.

The setback

Then something terrible happened. The cassette that I had listened to daily wore out from so much usage. I looked at my cassette player in horror as it ate my beloved bodybuilding tape. Although I tried in vain to salvage the twisted and tattered ribbon and wind it back onto the cassette wheels, the sickening reality hit me, my psychological advantage was now toast.

I placed 6th that year in the Nationals. It would be some 5 years later before I won a national title and realized my dream of competing in the IFBB Mr. Universe contest. Sadly, I never felt that I made the same gains as I did in those 18 months I was listening to Dr. Pulos' tape. I scoured stores for years looking for the tape but nobody had it or had even heard of it. It seemed the secret to my success would be lost forever.
